Before owning the Head Tide Store & the Parsonage in Alna’s Head Tide Historic District, Mike Herz lived and sailed on San Francisco Bay. While creating an air force, a navy, and a Baykeeper program to detect and stop Bay polluters, he became intrigued with the idea of solo sailing. After his first solo race around the Farallon Islands, 27 miles beyond the Golden Gate, he was hooked. He helped start the Singlehanded Sailing Society (SSS) to promote the sport of solo sailing as well as to improve the safety of offshore sailing. The SSS also sponsored the Singlehanded Transpac race to Hawaii that Mike entered. He will tell his story of preparation, training, outfitting, and adventure itself.
